From James R Kelly USCG (ret.)I don't know if you know the names of the officers in the photo's forground. I was shipmates with most of them for a year or so. In case you haven't had them identified before, they are: (L-R) ENS Charles Donohue, LT Robert Von Elm (Ops Boss), LT George Cooper (EO), LT Norman Sheer (XO), LCDR James Waters (CO), ENS Richard Hodges, ENS Edward Yost, ENS Robert Stancliff, CHPCLK Joseph Lavasseur, WO Wilber Jaynes. All, of course are Coast Guard officers.

Bridge

FromJack's Joint, a poem dedicated to a former Captain
of the USCGC VANCE WDE487

A SAILOR'S PRIDE
Ralph L. Cote
Dedicated to CAPT Norman L Scherer,
CO, USCGC Gresham 1964-68

There is this pride that every sailor has,
And that is seeing his ship,
Tied up right and alongside tight.
Her superstructure gleaming,
And her decks clean and bright.

Soon onboard, the Bosun’s pipe will sound,
Calling all hands to muster,
All divisions around.
From the quarterdeck you will hear,
"All hands present and accounted for, sir,"
Very loud and clear.

Then comes the command, which brings a cheer,
"All hands man your stations, prepare to get underway."
From the bridge comes the orders,
"Let go number one,
Let go number two,"
And then "Let go aft."

And slowly she begins to move from the dock,
Before the last order, "Let go the painter" is heard,
She is on her way.
Up the estuary and out of the Gate,
And away.

On the docks and vessels near,
they hear
That shrill whistle and the ship’s horn,
Harsh and loud.
This Coast Guard Cutter is going to sea,
Strong and Proud.
