Bob, sent this item which is 9.5 x 3.75 at is widest point x .5 thick, and has the same feel as a adjustable wrench, is from the Deep Freeze Cruise in 1961-62. This side says USS Vance the other 1961-62 Dunedin, N.Z.
Question is "What is it"?
It looks like a bottle opener, however, that is my guess.
Joe

Subject: Re: I got the package
Capt Penny must have had a great morale officer onboard, gearing up for those can openers for the crew.
I know that a callsign was arranged (KC4USP) for phone patches home for crew members as Richard called home from the South Pole.
He liked his CO and always said positive things about him. You were pretty close on the can opener guess and I thought the package had already arrived.
Take care Joe,

Re; Your mystery item -
What it looks like and felt like to you Joe wasn't a bad guess at all.
The 'object' is in fact a Patended "Crown" brand Bottle Opener - commonly known in the New Zealand Armed Forces as a "Church Key".
They were very popular tools right up until the advent of screw top beer bottles and then of course they became redundant.
The Crown Bottle Opener is a Kiwi invention!!!
So now you know.
