USS VANCE (DE-387) The second reunion of the USS Vance (DE-387) was held on October 11, 12, 13, 1995, in Connecticut. The crew met at the Connecticut Yankee Inn in Niantic which is just outside of New London, CT. There were 35 people total in attendace, 19 crew members and 16 spouses orguests. We gathered on Wednesday at the lodging to acquaint ourselves with new shipmates and renewed old with others from our first reunion. On Thursday it was on your own with one group going to the Foxwood indian Casino to try and increase their fortunes. Others went to Essex, CT, to ride the old steam train and then hoined the group at the casino. Still someone went to theMystic Seaport Museum to view the old ships and memorabilia stored there. On Friday we toured the U.S. Guard Academy where we had a luncheon at the officers club. Captain Patrick Stillman was our featured speaker and his talk was very moving and informative. The tour took us to the Visitors Center, accompanied by a second class cadet who was a very special young gentleman, and the nuseum, culminating at the parade grounds. |
The review was very impressive and the cadet corps of men and women (43% women) were a sight to behold. It is nice to see so many outstanding young people that are dedicated, especially when so many bad incidents are reported every day in the media. Back at the hotel we had our main banquet on Friday night and after dinner were treated to some videos taken of the day's activities by Joe Gallinoto. We also watched the video "Fighting Destroyer Escorts of WWII" and took great pride in our small contributions to the war effort. Saturday morning at breakfast we said our goodbyes and went on our way to other activities. Two shipmates that I know of went on to Cape Cod and had a round of golf. Submitted by: John A.
