- A letter from: WM. Jack Jenkins to his
brother Lindell.
- Only information about U-873 has been
posted.
-
- Lindell, I am enclosing for you a picture
of the submarine captain Fritz Steinhoff who
committed suicide after we had turned him over to
the army in Portsmouth. This submarine had been
out of Norway for two months and had expended
four of its torpedoes. The captain destroyed his
log when we boarded the submarine. This submarine
U-873 had been operating in a wolf pack just
outside the Mediterranean Straits where we
contacted it around 0200. This is after we had
made several runs over it and had dropped depth
charges. The unusual part of this encounter is
that this was a new type sub. For that time of
the war. This was a SNORKEL submarine, which
means that they could recharge their batteries
while submerged and in those days this was quite
an accomplishment.
