Comments= I recognize John Lundy's cartoon art... Just loaned my copy of "my yearbook" (Arnheiter Affair) to a non-Navy friend and got to thinking about those years. Just recently got a local dial-up so finally on the web and pleased to see your web site.
Note my comment about John Lundy, cartoonist extraordinaire, I talked to John a year or so ago, he just happened to have moved back to his hometown (Check with Phil for the name) where I found his name in the phonebook.
I remember Dick Fleming and Mike McWhirter from your list, but that's about all. I made efforts to find Bart Cingel, Gary Demaison and Bill Generous but no luck. I had the petty officer of the watch that day in Subic (or maybe one of those few times were were in Manila Bay?) when the commodore came aboard to relieve Marcus. Seems to me Bernie Black had the OOD, told me to take the news to Marcus, but I deferred to the messenger. I guess neither of us wanted to face Marcus, despite the fantastic news. I've still got lots of slides taken aboard ship; this has given me incentive to get some prints made and send same to you. Do you remember an incident with Marcus' "special fire team" when we had a broadcast news team aboard somewhere in the South China Sea? He was showing off the "team" as we steamed in circles around the target, as I recall a bullseye on a platform floating on two 55 gal. drums. Several of us were under the signal bridge, out of sight of the wing and standing next to the spud locker. When we got close enough to that target on one pass, we started throwing potatoes and Marcus came unglued. We scattered like chickens when he sent Farnum to spot us...
When I was still in the reserves I spent a week at Mare Island surveying electronic equipment.
Forgot who asked about the firecrackers being tossed over the partition into AOQ, of course I remember that!
Remember when the Frank Knox ran aground on Pratas Reef while we were on patrol?
Thanks again for the memories, Phil |
