Reasons for reading about the Vance= To find shipmates,Vance/Naval history
Comments= Was looking at the histories of the CG manned DE's for WW2 at DANFS and discovered that VANCE captured the U-873 on 11 May 1945. Looked for more info on VANCE and the capture of U-873 via a search engine and found your site.
Was not able to access or sign the logbook. Could not access the form for some reason.
Great site with lots of good information especially for us history buffs. Do military research, usually CG for a hobby. Member of NAFTS (National Association of Fleet Tug Sailors) You may want to check it out http://www.NAFTS.com Morehead City, NC

Joe,
Nice to hear back from you.
I see that you were a Radioman. In my civilian career I spent over 30 years at the Naval Research Lab in Wash DC doing communications research.
Went to NRL after school and stayed there for over 30 years. Did R & D on submarine communications equipment. In the 60's we were working on the old diesel boats but in the late 60's moved into the fast attack or 637 class nuke boats. We developed, installed, tested, trained and modified the equipment. As you can imagine I traveled to most of the sub bases but spent a lot of time at Pear Harbor. Also spent a lot of time riding the old boats and the new 637 class nuke boats.

You may want to visit NRL and the branch I worked in and see what our sub comms was all about.
http://server5550.itd.nrl.navy.mil/projects/SUBCOMM/index.html (index) Once there you will see Towed comm buoy interesting concept http://server5550.itd.nrl.navy.mil/projects/SUBCOMM/tBuoy.html Artic sub comms
http://server5550.itd.nrl.navy.mil/projects/SUBCOMM/subArc.html spent much time in the Arctic and Comms for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles http://server5550.itd.nrl.navy.mil/projects/SUBCOMM/UUV.html
Enjoyed my career there at NRL but after 36 years counting my time in the Coast Guard it was time to move on and retire.
Coast Guard career was 25 total years including 4 active and 21 reserve. Retired in 1978. More time allows me to do military research which is an interesting hobby as you probably know. I've been in touch with Scott Price, Historian, Historians Office at Coast Guard Hdqtrs in DC and asked him for information on VANCE. This is what Scott sent to me the other day after may e-mail request.
He's talking about the U boat event...........
Hello:
I mentioned that incident in my North Atlantic article--it's mentioned in her war diary but there's not much in our office's collection--I'll send you what I have if you'd like.
