Comments= Visited this summer with one of my shipmates from the Ingersoll & discovered some interesting things. My friend was a little puzzled why the Chief Engineer Officer was cold & distant at the previous reunion.
My conclusion after much discussion was that
- the CHENG was embarassed by the unlawful restriction of my friend one time,
- the CHENG was embarassed that the Ingersoll officers did NOTHING about Arnheiter and
- the CHENG was embarassed that my friend, a lowly enlisted puke aboard the DD-652 had done well for himself: big house on a hill in Newport Beach, CA, partner in an accounting firm and a yacht (which I was able to see that my friend had developed a fine sense of seamanship).
This is my opinion and I hope it has not rubbed any Vance wounds open. Arnheiter was/is a disaster and was a mistake. Many people are responsible for turning him loose on the Vance and should have a great deal of heartburn for doing so.
