It was most interesting to see the hand written letter from 1989 that I wrote about
KptLt Steinhoff.
Keep up the great work. I started doing research on him (Kapitan-leutnant Fritz Steinhoff) in the mid 80's. They are still some questions as to his death. The Captain of the U-234 whom was in the next cell, heard what sounded like a beating going on. Last I checked with the national archives these records were still classified. Joe: the flag and grave photo's are new to this site. Can you give me any information about the grave photo? Kirk: When it was taken and possibly who placed the flowers etc. Grave photo was taken by a friend of mine whom was living near by. She placed the reaf there. Photo taken in Dec 1989. Ft. Devins, MA. Grave marker # 934. Died: 9 MAY 45, Buried 11 MAY 45. Kapitan-leutnant Fritz Steinhoff, 25-year-old commander of the Nazi submarine U-873 This is wrong he was 36. Born in 1909. Joe: Where the flag was hanging when photos taken. Kirk: At the time the flag belonged to Victor Kovach of IL. Dated 1991 I also have a photo copy of Surrender at Sea by Charlie Gray. Has reference to the 873. Do you know Manuel Oliveria ? He had send much info to me about the capture of the 873. Story goes like this: My grandfathers sister used to go to germany often prior to WW2. To visit family. She past away in 1953. My Uncle had told me this. In one of the last letters from germany she was told that her nephew had joined the german navy his name was Friedrich Steinhoff. She was very sadden to learn of his death in 1945. My mother had also told me of him in the 60's. I was born in 1957. So he would be a distant cousin. Regards, Kirk Steinhoff . |
