Reason for reading about the Vance = My family history
Comment = Happened on the site. My Dad was Capt. Jim Waters USCG (Ret) in 1965 after 32 yrs. Dad died in 1996. Thanks to the new C.G. I had to get an old friend U.S. Rep. Howard Coble of N.C. a retired Capt. in the USCGR. He was able to get a small honor guard for the funeral in Braintree Mass. Dad was also Capt. of the Castle Rock.

I do remember my Dad talking fondly about the Ship.. they adopted me just before this time. It also seems to jog my memory that the day the Korean War started they were sailing I believe off the coast when suddenly a boiler blew up.. thought the N. Koreans had given them a shot. Till they discovered what really happened. Also Norm Shearer who was the Capt. after him served as Dad's XO on the Castle Rock.. Norm once ran the bow into the dock at Boston..!
Also.. Adm Roland was one of my Dad's golfing buddies. I remember him so well.. such a kind man.. along with Adm. Paul Trimble. called Paul when my Dad died.
