Comments: Hello my name is Ted Hagler, my father Ted E. Hagler who served in the Navy in the late 50's early 60's.
I was going through some things from his life and came accross a large certificate which has some parts missing. It is a certificate awarding him the privileges of being a Plank Owner. I know he served on the USS. Midway CV-41.
The ship in question is mentioned being commisioned on 1 Feb 1960. It also said that it was Airborne Early Warning Barrier Squadron Pacific at Barriers Point and Midway.
I was trying to reconstruct the certificate so I can have it framed but I have been unable to find any refrence to these certificates. Do you have any info that can help me out or can you point me in the direction of someone who may know a bit about this?
I leave in May for Afganistan as Im in the Army and I was wanting to get this done before then. Thanks for any helo you can offer me.

Ted Hagler

Hi Ted,
If your dad was stationed out of Barber's Point and Midway, he would have been in one of the air wings. No DER's were stationed at Midway, although we went in there for fuel on occasion when we didn't have enough to make it back to Pearl. He probably was a plank owner of one of VP (Patrol) squadrons out of Barber's Point, as all the DER's (ships) were commissioned not later than 1956.
Here is the site of all the patrol squadrons and especially those that served on the Atlantic and Pacific barriers. The man who built this site recently died of cancer. The site is being maintained in his honor. Scroll to the bottom of that page and click on the box that says "Enter VW site" http://www.willyvictor.com/
If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

Ted:
1. The Plank-Owners Cert. info is sketchy. Your dads' name w/USN yields nothing by google search. The MIDWAY was commissioned 3 times, ( 3 sets of P.O. Certificates ), and de-commissioned, 3 times.
          A. You need to know/divulge: full name, Navy Serial No., rank (E-3),rate, ( Airman/Seaman/Fireman); Dept./Division and the USN Unit that issued the Certificate, ( ship/station/squadron, etc. ).
          B. Historically, there is no central source, as most are locally generated. Modern-type, similar certificates have been available thru the United States Naval Institute ( USNI ).
          C. You said it was a large certicate, with parts missing. Can you have STAPLES or someone make smaller copies that can be scanned/sent by computer? If so, recipients can enlarge it, and better understand how to assist you.
2. It 'sounds' like your dad may have been part of an air wing/squadron, and not 'Ship's Company'. ( Barbers' Point NAS, on Oahu, vice 'Barrier's' Point.)
          A. Were there any pages from his Field Service Record, or any DD-214's?
          B. Any Page 3's would list all his unit assignments, for example.
          C. Any Honorable Discharge Certificates are "supposed' to have a summary-list of all units and periods embarked, with anything else considered significant, as a DD-214 DOESN'T record that.
3. http://cv41.org; This sites 'Muster Bar' yields nothing. However, there are only about 2,500 name-entries. The site is otherwise a cornicopea of links and info.
4. You can expedite getting copies of your fathers records from St. Louis, by going to their website, and doing it on line. This is your legal right, as Next-of-Kin. Also, anything in the National Archives. Lastly, the USS MIDWAY is a permanent museum, in San Diego, CA., at: http://www.ussmidway.org.
Good luck. I wish you safe passage, to and from Afghanistan.
          Sincerely,
CWO3(BOSN3) Wayne H. Farnum, USCG, Ret.
